It’s funny but also a bit silly - the other day I was challenged to consider when and how I work and what kind of habits I want to build. In exploration of that topic I realized that I generally feel like a workday starts at 9 and ends at 6.
I guess it’s and old, deeply engrained habit that has been with me for decades. The workweek starts on Monday morning and ends on Friday evening.
Even as I am writing this out, I catch myself thinking that this is total nonsense. I am running my own business, I can design this in whichever way I want.
I can design work around the hours when I work best e.g. I am the stereotypical night-owl, my best Ideas often come to me after 8PM. The philosophy part of my brain loves night time.
I enjoy variety in my days, sometimes I like to be alone, sometimes surrounded by people. I can design around that
I enjoy a mix of working from my home-office as well as outside. (I wrote about CoWorking and CarWorking before)
I enjoy having space for hobbies, interest and exploration. Imagine a grown man in the sandbox of life. Yeah, that’s me.
That’s when it really hit me: I have always been fascinated with the idea of having a 3 day weekend.
As of October 1, 2023 I will not work on Fridays anymore. My goal is to have perpetual 3-Day Weekends.
No, I don’t mean the “I WFH on Fridays and kinda take it easy, I’m available on Ping and Email but not really working”. Really treating Friday as part of the usual 3 day weekend. Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Same vibe. (Still without Sunday scaries)
Well in truth, my goal is much bigger than that. Most have heard me say it out loud. I am working towards a future where I will work max 20h per week, working on things that invigorate, energize and deeply fulfil me. Ideally, I would even like to have done some coaching on the last day of my life. Retirement seems like giving up. Being wealthy beyond belief is not important, the balance of meaningful work and reasonable income, much more so.
So while my 3-Day weekend Idea is not that space quite yet, it’s a big step towards it.
Cheers :)
PS: Have you seen how far AI has come recently? Below a video of me speaking in English, Japanese and Hindi. The crazy thing - I recorded myself for 2 minutes just randomly speaking for the system to learn. Then I typed out what I wanted it to say and had it auto translated. The system then generated the video, automatically altered my lip, eye, eyebrow- movement, somehow spoke these words in my voice and put it all together.
It took all in all maybe 5 min to make this. We’re in a for a wild ride!
