“So what energy do you bring to our call today?” That’s one of the questions I like to start a coaching conversation with. Here’s what one of my clients answered the other day:
“I have been reflecting on my life recently and I am really grateful of where I am at, the chances I’ve been given, the things I’ve accomplished, the places I’ve gone and the people who have been part of the journey. If it all ended here, I would be happy”
To clarify, he’s a man in his 30s with plenty of time left in this life (probably). He is in this state of bliss, relaxation and just deep happiness and appreciation.
I don’t know him this way, he’s usually rather rushed, with a million little things on his mind, trying to wrangle the endless stream of responsibilities.
What made the difference?
We had recently explored the concept of Gratitude in a few coaching sessions and discovered how it applies to him personally, his overall life, his circumstance, the people in his life and he surprised me with the depth in which he was able to be grateful. He continued exploring these concepts after the coaching session and it seems to have stuck with him deeply.
Interesting enough, his life is currently relatively tumultuous with plenty of challenges, huge upcoming change, uncertainties around every corner - yet, bliss and happiness is instantly available.
Could it be this simple? Is gratitude the key?
Of course we’ve all heard of the power of gratitude and how groundbreaking it can be in ones life to start a gratitude practice e.g. gratitude journal. I’ve tried i but never managed to make it a sustainable habit. My clients example motivates me to give this another try.
The Wikipedia article seems to agree and give some incredible validation on why everyone should practice gratitude regularly:
Alright, putting this right into action. Here are 3 things I am grateful for today:
3 Clients (you know who you are!) have referred me to coworkers/ friends this week - I deeply appreciate it and feel grateful and also a little proud. 🙏
My buddy Fernando who has gotten me into a tech conference here in Berlin this week saving me a whopping €800 for the ticket. 🙏
All those coaches, supporters, promoters and allies helping me to launch, understand and shape my own business. I am overwhelmed with the kind support from you. 🙏
What/Whom are you grateful for today?
