Reasons to go
There are always good reasons not to go on the trip, not to take the break, not to spend the money.
Last weekend was one of those for me - I felt like it was too expensive, possibly unnecessary and too short anyways. On the other hand, our good friends from Michigan were in Copenhagen for a few days and we live way too close to not go.
So after short deliberation, we decided to just go anyways and as I am reflecting on the trip, I noticed a few takeaways:
- the journey itself was super fun! 2h drive to the ferry, 2h on the ferry, 2h to the destination. (the same on the way back) makes for a mini adventure
- meeting good friends after years apart is incredibly invigorating and nourishing for the soul
- spending a few days in another place, another (pretty uncomfortable) bed, another kitchen, another culture etc. activates an awareness in the brain that is otherwise asleep. Hours can feel like days, a few days like a week. It's quite remarkable
- time away from screens as a family is fantastic bonding time to converse deeply, share experiences and collect another memory on this shared life journey
- being out of the usual comfort zone is by definition somewhat uncomfortable and that's great as it builds resiliency
I will definitely try to experience this in much more regular intervals.
Like Jim Rohn said "Life is not just the passing of time. Life is the collection of experiences and their intensity."
