A friend told me this story recently: when he was speaking to one of his friends, a entrepreneur who left his day-job a few years ago to start a business. Now wildly successful with a growing global business, my friend complimented him:
“Congratulations on taking the leap of faith, quitting your day-job and starting your own business! It worked out so well! ”
His friend responded drily “What are you talking about, I was fired. I have a family to take care of and no choice but to figure it out…”
»This landed, as I am sitting here on 5th of April 2023 pondering my future«
For roughly 20 years now, I have been working at companies for other people. It’s been a rewarding time filled with learning, connection and growth. Of course it has not always been easy but all in all it has been great.
Having a “day-job” gives this feeling of comfort, not just financially. Also in terms of routines, human connections, certainty about the future (LOL) and some sort of predictability if things continue to go well.
When I first heard that my role was being moved to the regional HQ, I didn’t really fully process what that meant. Could I pack up and move to Amsterdam? Sure, done that type of thing plenty of times before. Do I want to? Heck No!
So it did not take much consideration to decide on Option B, take a few weeks severance and leave.
What now?
My first instinct was to get back on LinkedIn and search for roles. “Head of Sales” sounds great, but is that really what I want to do right now?
Now that I had been coaching for a few years “on the side”. I had a list of happy clients and plenty of evidence that this is not just something I truly enjoy but more importantly, my clients are getting great value from. Hold on! There is a type of work that creates income, helps people in profound ways and at the same time gives me energy!?
“What if I wasn’t just an after-hours coach anymore, what if this was my full-time job” How would that feel? Could it work? Do I even dare to dream about this future?
So here we go! Let’s find out!
As of April 1, 2023 I am now focusing 100% of my time on coaching. This creates an incredible canvas of opportunity to re-design the idea of “work” for myself. This round it’s not about maximizing the OTE plan and stock options but maximizing my own personal joy and fulfillment while doing deeply meaningful work.
